Home Tour || The Family Room

June 8, 2015

Good Monday morning to you! I have to say the beach was wonderful, just what this gal needed. And I'll be sharing those photos and memories later this week. But, today I wanted to get back to my home tour series, and share another part of my house with you.

I can't decide which is more of the home's hub, the kitchen or the family room. What are your thoughts? I think they'd equally be a central gathering spot in any home, which is why one day when husband and I can build our dream home, the family room and the kitchen will be open to one another. But, for now, we have a pretty good set-up. The kitchen is right off of the family room, and has a fairly open entry way to and from that room.

Our family room sees a lot of love. It's one of the places we spend most of our time, whether it's just the two of us or company is over. Because of that, we knew we wanted a cozy, welcoming space. And that's how I went about piecing it together, furniture and accents combined.

We are fortunate to have a large, and long, family room, which affords enough room for not only seating, but for tables, bookcases, and other home decor.

I'm not sure I would say there is a focal point of the room, but if there was it would be the console table and the gallery wall above it. This happens to be my very favorite part of the room as well. And when we recently added the tall bookshelf to the corner, it really completed that side of the family room.

If you've been around the blog for awhile, you know that the console table is one of my favorite places to decorate for the holidays and fall season. Husband and built our console last August, and we have one final piece to complete before it's totally finished. The top is currently melamine board covered in a tablecloth. Husband and my idea is to create a smooth concrete top to adhere to the frame. This will give the tabletop a stone look. Until we find a) the time to complete it and b) the best way to mix concrete, this is how our console table looks. I still swoon over it, even in its unfinished state.

The gallery wall is the best way to tie a space together, giving it color and a personal touch. If you have the space to make one, I highly recommend that you do!

As in all the rooms in my home, accents are everywhere. There's a fine line of the perfect balance and overboard when it comes to home decor pieces. You have to be careful, while still making sure your space exclaims, "YOU!".

Another large aspect of our family room is the fireplace/built-in wall. It's also home to the television, making it a visual piece when watching a movie or a t.v. show. Again, accents are the main part of the built-ins. Subtle was the way to go here. Each nook in the built-ins has a little something without being too busy. And when you have the many shelves to fill, busy is what you want to steer clear of!

Our family room also happens to be the first room you see when you come up the stairs from the front door. That means keeping this room clean is a must, but that's not always the case :)We wanted to make sure the room felt open, airy, and welcoming from the get-go. So light colors, pops of accent colors, and an open flow were important when arranging the space.

If you're looking for a way to bring color into a space, might I recommend accent pillows. They make all the difference, and if you make them yourself, you get a custom piece for your room. Not to mention, they're easy to swap out out if you make new covers! Think Christmas patterns come this December :)

Luckily, this room gets a lot of natural light, which really makes the space bright throughout the entire day. I am a firm believer that there can never be too much natural light!

All in all, our family room is our little oasis, where we lounge and entertain. Making it feel like home in the very first room you see when coming into our house, was the key. And I think we did just that. By combining our styles, little trinkets, and a lot of love, you can make a room feel cozy and just like you in no time! Now come on over. We'll sit down in my family room, sip some lemonade, and talk all things home decor! :)

You can see the first part of this home series tour, by taking a peak at our home office! Stay tuned in the coming weeks for another room reveal! xo
