Friday Favorites || It's Almost October!

Friday, September 29, 2017

Happy weekend eve! Here (above ^) is my current scene, while my little plays with magnetic letters on the dishwasher. Does anyone else feel panicky over how fast fall is moving by? I feel like I need a PSL in one hand, a stack of pumpkins in the other, a fire crackling, leaves falling around me, and a sweater on all at the same time to make sure I don't miss out on anything. And this summer weather needs to see it's way out, and let fall do its thing. I just can't get over how quickly September has come and gone. Though, I am so excited for the best month of all! October is going to be extra special, I'm sure of it! Who else is excited for the return of fall shows, pumpkins everywhere, Halloween costumes, and crisp, cool days in chunky sweaters?!

As soon as I sign off, I'll be pulling out the Halloween décor for a little decoration switch-a-roo (anyone else do this too?), then charging my camera battery and picking outfits for the pumpkin patch tomorrow! Oh , and I can't forget to add college football to tomorrow's festivities. It has me all giddy just thinking about it! What are your weekend plans?

Now for some favorites....
  • I shared these slip-on sneakers in this IG post this week, and y'all loved them as much as I do. They're a fall staple at a great price! They appear much more camel-colored in the online photo. But they are a soft taupe in-person. Grab them!
  • Another great pair of slip-ons that I bought last year and still love, are these! Bonus, they're quilted! And if you don't love the price, try these instead. The fabric is different, but they are still just as adorable. And they come in olive too.
  • These pillows are some of my top picks for home accents. In fact, I have two on the couch in Midnight Blue. And I'm thinking of adding some pops of mauve to a bench I am adding to our family room.
  • Speaking of shades of pink, I've never been a big pink person. Then I had a daughter. And things started changing. However, I am very picky about the particular shades of pink. So when I fell for a pink dutch oven, I didn't even second guess myself, and scooped it up on major clearance. It's kind of fun cooking with a pink pot :)

And one last thing! You all know I love a good fall candle. And in honor of my favorite month, Twine & Cotton is offering its BIGGEST discount to date! So grab your candles before it ends at midnight on Monday!! Use code: OCTOBERGLORY1 for 20% off your entire order!! It does not apply to tarts.

p.s. head to my Instagram to shop the items in the photo above! Make sure you have signed up for Like To Know It emails and like the photo. Then you'll get a direct email with links to what you see!

Happy weekending, friends! See you back here in October ;)

Keeping A Decorated Home With Littles

Thursday, September 28, 2017
A question I tend to get a lot is how do I keep Greer from touching all of my decorative accents. If you've seen my home, you know that I like to keep it decorated for the seasons and holidays. There are décor pieces all around, from the bottom of the console table to the hearth by the fireplace. Most of these (glass, sentimental, delicate, and/or special pieces) are in perfect reach of an adventurous and curious toddler. So how do I do it?

Let me start by saying, I've always known I wanted a family-friendly + styled home that was cozy and welcoming. I knew I needed to keep my expectations reasonable and maintain flexibility, but without compromising my style. Because dear friends, you can have a beautiful home that reflects your personal taste even if you're house is full of little ones. It is possible, and I encourage you to try!

M Y    T I P S   +    T R I C K S

  • Discipline on behalf of myself + husband, and Greer too.
    • Since a very early age, we have set rules and boundaries in our home for our daughter. We do this not only for her safety, but for her enjoyment too. As her parents we have to stay consistent with enforcing the rules. and following through when she does not listen. And by choosing to listen, Greer's discipline for not touching/doing what she shouldn't becomes a habit for her. With clear guidelines, she can freely enjoy her home while being respectful of the things around her. Don't fret, we aren't perfect at this, and Greer doesn't also listen the first time. It's not perfect, but I can tell you that 9 times out of 10 our girl is following the rules and that's because we're consistent in our home and in others'.
  • Saying "no touch."
    • We implemented this as soon as she started reaching out and grabbing for things. While we want her to explore, we also want her to do so safely. So if she reaches for something glass, dangerous, or just something we don't want her to touch, we use a stern and loving voice to tell her, "no touch." Greer trusts our word, and to this day when she's walking around playing, she'll occasionally point something out, and in the sweetest little voice say, "no touch!" Then she moves on her merry way.
  • Setting things out that are decorative and okay for playing.
    • I don't want to taunt Greer with our décor. So I make sure to include pieces around the house that are play-friendly. Items that she is welcome to play with as she pleases and to return at the end of day before bedtime. For instance, I have two plastic pumpkins just her size sitting in the magazine rack. There is also a plush, pillow pumpkin in the basket next to her chair. And she has a little pumpkin basket to play with and keep toys in during the fall season. She loves having her own décor just like mama's, and I love making it available to her.
  • Keeping a designated play space just for her.
    • On the other half of our family room, is Greer's play area. It's where we keep her toys, and we have tried to make it a special spot (decorated too!) where she can do all the toddler things. She knows where her toys go, how to treat them well, and that she can play with them all over the family room while being mindful (and careful) of what is around her. Helping her see tangible boundaries throughout our home has been huge in helping her understand boundaries that aren't so visible.

So there it is! These are a handful of the ways I maintain a decorated house year round with a little running around. Her wonder at the festive touches delights my heart. Her favorite things are the "twinkle lights" strung around the grapevine pumpkins, and she loves the garland strung from the mantle too. She has the sweetest demeanor, and after nap last week, when I had finished photographing the house for the Fall Home Tour, she came into the family room leaned on the ottoman and took it all in (I secretly captured her in the photo above). I heard her say, "Wow!" before turning around to me with the biggest grin on her little face. It was more magical than the décor itself. And it was the best reminder of one of the biggest reasons why I decorate, for the delight of my family.

Friends, I hope you were encouraged by this. By no means is our house always in a state of perfection. There are nights when the toys aren't put away (and mama is too tired to even bother); days when listening isn't Greer's strong suit; and weeks when the laundry basket becomes part of the décor. But, perseverance is everything and implementing some of these tips will have you well on your way to a decorated home full of littles. Happy decorating!

Treating Yourself With AVEENO®

#TimeWithAveeno #CollectiveBias

Where are my fellow mamas at? It's not always easy to take time for yourself, between checking off your to-dos, taking care of babies, keeping the house in some kind of order, and so on. Let's be honest, there are days you forgo the shower in order to get something else done. Which makes a shower a luxury when you can slow down to enjoy one instead of running through it like a fast-track car wash. Whether you're clocking yourself for your fastest shower time yet or you're slowing down to enjoy it, I've found the perfect product for savoring that little bit of me-time.

AVEENO® Skin Relief Body Wash and AVEENO® POSITIVELY RADIANT® 60 SECOND In-SHOWER FACIAL are two great ways to treat yourself while taking care of yourself too! The creamy body wash is gentle, yet effective at cleansing away impurities, leaving skin feeling soft, smooth, and healthy-looking. The in-shower facial is a way to indulge while transforming your skin into brighter, more velvety soft skin in just a minute.

No matter how long or quick your shower might be, it's easy to turn your bathroom into a little spa oasis. Start by keeping a clean counter. A clean surface is always such a pick-me-up for me. Do you feel like that too? Next, light your favorite candle and dim the lights. I love lamp light, and we keep a lamp in every room because it's so much better than overhead light. This will set a calm and peaceful ambiance for you to enjoy all the perks of using AVEENO®'s body wash and in-shower facial.

You can find both AVEENO® products in the shower and beauty aisles at Walmart. They are easy to find, easy to use (just follow the instructions on the product!), and a fabulous way to treat yourself in an everyday moment!

Hello, Fall!

Friday, September 22, 2017

Welcome, fall!! The second best day of the year has arrived! Are you wondering what I consider the best day of the year? October 1st. It is, after all, the very best month of them all! We'll be rounding out the last week of September with a lot of fall goodness, though. We'll be celebrating husband's birthday and making our first of a couple trips to the pumpkin patch. It will be glorious!

Outside of the first day of fall, I am beyond excited to welcome husband home tomorrow after a week away for a work trip to Sweden. We'll be having a low-key weekend while he re-coups from jet lag, and I am so looking forward to it.

To celebrate the arrival of fall, here are some of my favorite things for the season...

  • How adorable is this pom beanie? And if mama has a beanie, baby does too. Look at this one!
  • I love lounging around in sweatshirts for cozy weekends. I grabbed this one today, and I am so excited to sport it.
  • A good throw blanket for cuddling up with! And this one is on sale!
  • I love a good coffee mug, and Rachel and I are co-hosting a giveaway over on our Instagrams for you to win a fall mug and candle! Go enter!!
  • Go get yourself a treat on this Friday, first day of fall, and grab a non-fat salted caramel mocha frappuccino, no whip. It's delightful. If it's cold where you are (the summer heat showed back up in Virginia for who knows what reason), then grab this as a hot latte!

Have a lovely weekend! xo

p.s. You all have been the absolute sweetest over my fall home tour! I can't think you enough for all of the kind words! xo

p.p.s. Did you read my little love letters for September??

The Cozy Season || Fall Home Tour 2017

Thursday, September 21, 2017

Happy (almost) fall! Come on in! I am so excited to welcome you into my home today to share how I make our house cozy and festive for the season. You know good and well that my home has been decked with pumpkins since mid-August, making this day a long time coming. Grab a cup of coffee and settle in with a blanket. I've got a post full of photos and all things fall!

I think my favorite thing about our family room is all of the natural light we get. It makes everything feel fresh and airy, which is exactly the kind of way I wanted to decorate. This day last year we had just moved into our house, we had only been living here for four days. I didn't get to do a lot of decorating for fall because there were projects upon projects going on. This year I'm making up for it, but I am being more intentional with my personal style. I find that when you decorate for yourself, it always feels that much lovelier.

I opted to stick with oranges, reds, and little pops of blues since they're in our house year round. I have loved the classic combination of colors while also keeping a lot of neutrals in the background.

This time of year, as the air gets chillier, the leaves cascade down, and sweaters are the most important part of your wardrobe, a good fire is essential. I love the smell, the sounds, and the feel. However, we've been experiencing some summer temperatures this week after being teased with fall weather the last several weeks. This puts a crackling fire on the back burner. But, I love to cozy up a space with lots of candles and lamps. A lantern full of candles by the fireplace is the perfect way to make a room feel warm when you don't want the heat of a fire burning. And when it is cold enough for a fire, light those candles too, because it makes for the most wonderful sight.

This wooly ball garland quickly became a favorite piece of décor. It perfectly complements the colors in the space without being an exact replica of what already exists. Heather owns Wooly Sheep Dots, and she let me design a garland that would fit seamlessly into my space. I'm in love! Aren't you? You can grab your very own "Fireside Cozy" garland in her shop. Use code: DARLINGDO10 today through the 25th for 10% off all garland!

Now just imagine a fire roaring away in the fireplace. Want to come settle in with blankets, coffee, hot cocoa, and movies?

Our family room sits right next to the dining room, which is even more reason to carry the fall décor over into this space too. I kept with the same color palette, and added some greenery. I think my favorite thing is the garland I looped through the chandelier. It's just fun, and I love something fun and a little unexpected!

Again, candles make all the difference. Light them when you can and add them to décor when you wouldn't normally think to do so. They're great at cozying up any room.

Now that my table is all set, want to come over for a dinner party? I love hosting, and often don't do it enough. But, I really want to change that over the holiday season. And yes, I do believe that fall is the official open to the holidays ;)

Last, but not least, is the foyer. It's the first thing you see when you walk into our house. And it's important to me that it feels welcoming. I kept is simple with several pumpkins and a few pops of dried flowers and some berries. It feels lovely and perfectly fall!

Friday Favorites || Time, Slow Down!

Friday, September 15, 2017
Wire Basket || Magazine || Candle || Festive Paper Straws

Whoah, this week went fast! And I know I say that a lot, but this week really moved at lightning speed. Can someone send a memo to the timekeeper and let him know so slow down a bit. This season needs to move slowly, for the sake of enjoying more fall things and for keeping my baby little longer. We're almost three months away from her second birthday. I can't even.

In other news, husband and I are working on our next project, the eat-in nook in our kitchen. My engineer gladly accepted my request for a light above the table in the nook. There was not an existing one in place, so he had to wire things, cut wholes, hang out in the attic, take things apart, and put them back together. It took over a day to get done, but it looks SO good! I'm pleased beyond my expectations. I am excited to share this reveal with you soon. Never underestimate the power of light in a space. It has changed up the feel of the kitchen entirely. Psst....the shiplap that is going up is also changing the feel ;)

So some favorites lately....

  • Speaking of lighting...I added this cute little lamp baseshade to our kitchen for a cozier feel, and it does just that. I love lamp light vs. overhead light always. So it's nice having a lamp in the kitchen, because who says a kitchen can't be cozy?!
  • These pumpkins just keep multiplying in my house. I have no idea how....at least that's what I'm telling husband ;)
  • I have fallen in love with flameless candles for décor purposes. With a toddler running around, it's safe, and for this mama brain, it's safe so I won't forget to put them out. I have a lantern next to the fireplace just begging for flameless, but still life-like candles. But I'm still burning all the fall candles in out-of-reach places.

And that's it! On to the weekend, friends! xo

p.s. Did you see our annual apple picking adventure?

Pumpkin Spice Popcorn

Wednesday, September 13, 2017
Good Wednesday morning! I have been excited to share this with y'all since last Wednesday. I knew as soon as husband and I made it, that it was most certainly worth sharing here. If you're anything like me, then we share a big kind of love for sweets. On this particular afternoon, it was rainy, overcast, and quite chilly. Husband had returned from a work trip, and baby girl was asleep (until we woke her up with the noise from the air popper #rookiemistake). Basically, it was the perfect afternoon for a little popcorn + cocoa + a fire. And that's exactly what we did. But, instead of making a salty popcorn, we spiced things up a bit (see what I did there?) and made a more fall-festive rendition of our beloved air-popped popcorn.

This recipe is SO simple, and only calls for five ingredients. I do recommend using an air popper because there is nothing like it when it comes to popcorn. If you have a party to host or an afternoon to binge on Netflix, this is your snack from now through forever.

  • What You'll Need
    • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels (we used white)
    • 4 TBSP salted butter
    • 2 TBSP granulated sugar
    • 1 TSP cinnamon
    • 1/2 TSP pumpkin pie spice
  • What You'll Do
    • Pop the kernels in the air popper and set aside.
    • In a saucepan (or microwave), melt the butter.
    • While the butter is melting, mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice.
    • Drizzle the butter over the popcorn, tossing well to cover it evenly.
    • Sprinkle the sugar + spice mix, again tossing well until the popcorn is covered evenly.
    • Enjoy with hot cocoa or even sparkling apple cider, preferably while fireside!

Grab a blanket and your person for a cuddled up afternoon or evening on the couch by the fire. The perfect movie is also required!

Glass Bowl || Velvet Pumpkins || Mugs (similar + similar) || Wooden Tray (similar)

p.s. Did you hear that the Target dollar section has come online?!
You do have to buy in multiples, but it's a start!

Apple Picking On The Mountain

Tuesday, September 12, 2017
With my favorite time of year, comes my favorite things to do, many of which have turned into yearly traditions. Every September, the second week in, we head to Carter Mountain to pick our share of Golden Delicious apples. We fill the bag full in the orchard, then peruse the little store with all of its fall and Halloween handmade pieces, and enjoy a cider. This visit we grabbed a frozen apple cider (SO good! Even better than the peach slushes!) and a couple apple cider donuts that we enjoyed while rocking on the back deck over-looking the city and surrounding mountains. The weather was perfection, a gentle and cool breeze blowing steadily, and the sun stayed out with an occasional dip behind the clouds. We couldn't have asked for a better apple picking adventure!

Greer was delighted to pluck big, green apples right off of the trees. If she could have, she would have tried to hold onto every single one we picked. This particular orchard is on a down-hill slope, so we couldn't let her just wander through the rows, though she would have loved that freedom. So instead, her daddy would treat her by picking her way up in the air so she could reach some high apples. She would have gladly taste-tested each apple too. But we were certain we didn't want little teeth marks in all of our fruit :)

Outfit Details:
on Greer --> Rain Boots (similar) || Overalls || Shirt || Bow

I can't get over this girl in her overalls. They are the most precious thing. And she loves to wear them, which makes it all the better.

The view is breathtaking from any place you are standing. Rocking on the back deck was a nice way to end our time at the orchard. I can't believe that our first tradition of the fall season has come and gone already! Time is flying, and I am trying my best to slow down and savor it all. We have so many fun things ahead of us from now through the rest of the year.

Now it's time for some apple baking, and I think today is going to be a great day for a fresh apple crisp crumble! Who doesn't love a fresh-from-the-oven apple dessert?! What are your favorite apple recipes? I'd love to know!

See our past years of apple picking!
