A Big Girl Bedroom

March 8, 2019

The last time I shared Greer's room, it was a nursery complete with a crib. Since then we have transitioned her to a big girl bed, and traces of all things baby have disappeared. Her room has such a different feel now, and as bittersweet as it was to change it up, it has also been a lot of fun to create a space that fits her now.

Her new room still boasts the beautiful block tulip wallpaper we hung during our first winter in our home, and that's where I continue to pull inspiration from. I love that the base design of her room can grow with her, allowing us to tweak the small touches with each new stage.

Meet Clara, the horse Santa brought her this past Christmas. She chose the name, and gently takes care of this horse every day. We've found all of her hair clips in the horse's mane along with her headbands placed just so around the horse's head. It's the cutest thing. As is the photo of her posing with Clara (below) that she asked her mama to take.

A new addition to her room is this large basket that holds all of her dress-up items. It's an aesthetically pleasing way to create storage. And y'all know I love a good basket.

With blue wallpaper, I really wanted to keep the rest of the big pieces neutral, using touches of blush pink as an accent. So while it might seem crazy to use off-white bedding for a little, I have loved this choice. It keeps the room light and airy, and it hasn't been hard to keep it looking crisp and clean. Don't be afraid to use whites with children!

My favorite part about this room is how much Greer loves it. This space is for her, and it melts my heart to watch her play and pretend and do all the little girl things in her bedroom. My goal was always to create this special area for her to be a child in, and watching that live out is so rewarding. Make them feel as much a part of their room as you can, and that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style!

If you're working on a child's room, some tips I have to make it as magical for them as it is for you:
  • bring in pieces that they can interact with (a stand-up mirror their size)
  • whimsical elements (the plush wall animals)
  • a soft spot for play (the shag rug)
  • photos + prints (of your child + things they love - in this instance the pink flower prints; the silhouette; the photo of Greer at 2.5 years old)
  • cozy bedding (it makes snuggles all the better)
